Fire in electrical. CHIRP report M2731: a rescue vessel had switched on Restricted in Ability to Manoeuvre lights in a busy VTS fairway when the crew smelled burning, then saw smoke from behind the electrical panel.
They caught it early, isolated the circuit and kept the operation running. That is the part that worked. The part that did not: the whole navigation-light display ran through one panel, so one deteriorating connection could have taken out the signal the vessel needed most, in the middle of dense traffic.
CHIRP's comment is specific: critical systems should, wherever practicable, have redundancy, so the loss of one circuit does not take the required lights with it. Thermal imaging on switches and terminals catches a hot connection before it becomes smoke.
Does your vessel's navigation lighting survive the failure of a single panel, or does it just survive as long as nothing fails?
